Should You Draw With A Fountain Pen Reddit

x pen drawing techniques and tips

When drawn with knowledge, a slap-up pen cartoon carries a certain evocative power that stems from the cleanliness of the finished work. Withal, that same cleanliness can likewise leave yous vulnerable because high contrast line drawings requite yous nowhere to hide.

Every line in pen and ink communicates knowledge and ability or timidity and uncertainty. It's a fine line between one and the other, no pun intended. To help, here are some of my techniques for making pen and ink drawing more than outgoing and less nerve-racking. Grab your best pens (come across our Copic marker Blackness Friday post) and let'southward become started.

This pen and ink video is a tribute to one of my favourite artists, Chuck Close. If this inspires you lot to educate yourself farther, head over to Schoolism.com (opens in new tab) to discover courses (including two of mine!), workshops and more than. It's an amazing way to study with the pros!

My pen, nibs, and ink

To draw in ink, you need a pen, nibs, and ink. I like using Higgins Blackness Magic ink (opens in new tab), which is waterproof when dry, so I tin can paint over information technology and the ink won't run. Call up to simply pull or drag a nib to make marks; pushing will cause splatters and ruin your work. As well, a slight change in pressure will change the thickness of your lines. These are things you demand to go used to at the outset.

02. Know your strokes

Unlike strokes for different folks

In a higher place are my favourite techniques for creating the illusion of gradations in value using high contrast blackness ink on white newspaper. Wait at thick and thins. Beak pens are swell for this. Describe structures in shadows with thicker lines, and structures in light with thinner lines. Try it yourself: draw a circle, then go over the lesser of it with a heavier line and immediately it gains volume and looks like a ball.

03. Use a mixture of pens

pen and ink drawing

Grab a pen, any pen

I like to employ different pens for different things. I use thick markers for big shadows because they're big and chunky and cover a lot of paper chop-chop. I similar Sharpies for smaller shadows and thick continuous lines. A blue writing pen might exist good for clouds, waves, or annihilation that might look cool in blue. Consider all characteristics of your pens, like colour, thickness, so on. Be artistic and stay alert for any pen that can brand your piece of work singled-out.

04. Hold your pen properly

Concur on loosely!

Merely changing the way you agree your pen can add an extra dimension to your pen and ink drawings and make them special and unique so that they stand out from other artists. I like to hold my pen at the dorsum whenever possible considering the looseness in my lines often present unexpected opportunities in my work. If your drawings are usually very tight and controlled, requite this method a attempt, you might surprise yourself with the wonderful accidents that can happen.

05. Just add together h2o

Unconventional "watercolour"

As y'all might tell from my previous tips, when working with ink, tones can become a puzzle. I've talked about hatching and line weight, hither's a play tricks that takes tones more than literally: try rubbing a fleck of water onto your fresh ink lines to create softer tones. In a compression, I would practice this with saliva and my finger! Softer tones aslope ink lines create a wonderful contrast and will make your drawings a picayune more than lifelike.

06. Employ a Crow Quill

As the Crow Quill flies

The Crow Quill (opens in new tab) makes the thinnest lines I know of outside of a Rapidograph (opens in new tab). Information technology has a scratchy feel and allows great accuracy. I use the Crow Quill when I want to practise a Rembrandt-esque drawing. Yet, because of the fineness of Crow Quill lines, this pen is really simply suitable for smaller drawings; there are more than efficient ways of doing a large drawing than with a Crow Quill. Once you're finished inking, practice a wash to add dimension to your cartoon.

07. Don't forget to wash

Don't forget to launder

Ink wash is like a hybrid inking and painting technique washed with a castor instead of a pen. Value is controlled by your ink to water ratio – the more than ink or less h2o, the greater your value. Start with your brush dipped liberally in ink so it collects on your newspaper. Paint by pulling the ink puddle across the page. Re-dip your brush when needed, ever keeping a puddle, and continue washing. Ink launder and watercolour techniques are like.

08. Use dry pens

Your pen can yet have a life subsequently decease

Don't exist too quick to throw abroad your stale up pens! Pens on their terminal jiff can deliver a very dry, nearly brush-like stroke to your pen and ink drawings, which has a completely different wait from other tools. As well, past putting dry pens away with the cap tightly fixed, you may resurrect them for a few more than minutes' employ. Try it the next fourth dimension your pen dies.

09. Sketch first

Cartoon can relieve your fears

The unforgiving permanence of ink can stress some people out. But call up, simply because you lot're making an ink drawing doesn't mean yous have to employ ink all the fashion through. I'm a business firm believer that art should be fun and stress-free. So if launching direct into ink is too much pressure level, try cartoon your image in pencil get-go, then add together ink over it. Either way works, but do what you're comfortable with to gear up yourself upwardly for the greatest joy.

10. Try to arctic

A cool cat

Art should be fun. You can forget this when you worry as well much nearly making mistakes or captivate over every line you draw and forget the joy of making art. Call back the bigger picture. Every journey every making is fraught with mistakes and missteps. That's okay; it's normal. Just remember that each line serves a greater whole and leads to your final prototype. If you make a error, chill out and movement on – it might not fifty-fifty be noticeable in the end. Your lines Volition get better with time so relish the journeying.
